It’s been a week of travelling for us. If it’s Tuesday it must be Lancaster; Friday, Hi Walsall; oh Monday, hello Gloucester; and finally Saturday: wahoo Glasgow! We were on a journey. At each point we met up with folk, many of whom we didn’t know.

We would post those reviews online so that it might benefit those who have stood out. There are websites which focus entirely on reviews for this and that.

On the Motorway

On one occasion we stopped for the obvious and a cuppa at a motorway station on the M6. As you would expect we savoured the brief rest from the journey but took the opportunity to have a look at the lake nearby. Wow. As we looked across the lake, we noticed the geese, but then we saw the heron. It stood motionless and then took to flight. It made us think of our journey. It flew so gracefully. It then took up sentry guard on the far side of the lake, looking for a late breakfast. I’m not sure our review for the service station was a typical one.

At a Park

Amongst the undergrowth at a park we spotted a tree trunk, its years of growth clearly visible; however, this one told a story. Of course the centre was at the ‘birth’ of the tree but then the radiating lines now mark a timeline for society. The Second World War, the first man on the moon was highlighted as well as the first mobile phone. It made us pause and wonder of our own timeline.

I always think that the irony here is that the most extreme ring shown was when the tree was cut down…when society and nature collided.

My journey

I have commented before on my journey of faith leading to ordination, a crazy covenant. What I have noticed this past week is of release. Release from the past and an opportunity to move on. Often we may feel the weight of the past which impinges on our ability to progress. Those voices from the past can continue to speak to us – especially at the night – and reinforce those past feelings. When we can move forward, freeing us from those voices – they are but voices – we can feel free to fly, as gracefully as the heron.
