Childhood Hobbies

Twiddle Muffs

Mandy says that as a child she never mastered knitting or even had any interest in it. Now, it is very different. Do we have childhood hobbies that remain with us or do they change akin to seasons of the year throughout our life?

Other than the proverbial Teddy Bears that spring up in many nooks of the living room, Twiddle Muffs also may be found. The intricate design, where you sew into the inside of the Muff buttons & toggles to allow folk to reminisce old times using just the sense of feel, is amazing.

It’s a journey for the recipient.

Reflecting back is a positive way of seeing what has brought life to us. In the Catholic Examen prayer, people can use the fingers of their hand to journey through the day or past fortnight, whatever, and see what has brought life to them.

They use a five finger Examen. It doesn’t need to take long.

Our opportunity to share what we have been doing recently today:

We mentioned the Invention of Wings, a captivating book; Liberty Lawn cloth; and the recent planting episode of BBC CountryFile which mentions Rutherglen.

Our Hobbies

Miniature Creations - Sampler

So to our childhood hobbies: who has used a cotton reel and 4 nails? Sounds more like a weapon but French Knitting was all the craze once. During the Pandemic we may have started to attend Zoom classes which have helped with our love of drawing – although with the ‘return to normality’ those classes have started to stop. The knitting has helped us to take our mind off the issues which confront us recently. It diverts our attention from the bad news – is it the repetitive calming effect? That hobby “takes us into a different world“. It has helped us to nurture for our family – making jumpers and scarves for our children. Our parents taught us knitting and people can recall the lovely smell of baking – even now. What childhood hobbies can you recall?

Here’s a Twiddle Muff Knitting Pattern, another opportunity for service – part of the Methodist Church’s calling.

Purl in the Field

June ‘Purl in a Field’ Newsletter

The June bimonthly ‘Purl in the Field‘ physical newsletter will be released later this week. Its intention is to provide a link to those not online but would value being involved with this group. It’s an opportunity to have a chat about crafts with all. The title of the newsletter is drawn from Matthew’s Gospel. The Kin_dom of God is like a pearl in the field… what treasure is this?

We could include your favourite recipe or pattern, and pointers for prayers.
