The Samarathon

In July I’m committing to running at least 26 miles to raise money for the Samaritan’s. Why?

When I used to teach at the comprehensive school, back in Sleaford, I had an additional duty. I was an active listener. I was asked to listen to pupils who were struggling.

This might be due to issues at home, circumstances such had arisen affecting their learning, or because of pressures from mentally rationalising life. On some occasions the situation was so fraught that not only did we have frequent times we’d meet up to chat, but we would offer the services of the Samaritan.

To give them the number and suggest that, if necessary, they could speak with Jo on 116 123, was a great relief to them.

With my work as a Street Pastor in Lincoln we met up with folk who were celebrating or commiserating life’s events. During on the kerb, hearing their story, knowing that the night was soon to turn into day meant that we felt helpless. We might often leave them with our contact number but it was far better to leave them the Samaritan’s number.

I’ve recently completed a series of counselling sessions where I have come to terms with where I am. There has been a time when life became overwheming. To know that there would be someone, at whatever time, willing to listen could be, for many, a real life saver.

That’s why I’m raising funds for the Samaritan’s. Largely invisible, faceless, behind the scenes – these people offer life lines at the most harrowing of times, whatever the time.

Please help if you can. Thanks
